A directional control valve is a device intended for controlling hydraulic flows in a hydraulic system by means of an external action. They are used in the hydraulic systems of presses, stationary machines, machine tools, truck cranes, forestry manipulators, crane-manipulators and excavators.

Directional control valves are classified by the type of shut-off and control elements into:
- spool-type,
- rotary (cock) type,
- poppet-type,
- jet-type,
- nozzle-flapper type valves.
